Friends of Williamsburg Rowing was founded in 1993 by parents of rowers as a booster organization for WMRC. It has since evolved to support community rowing in Williamsburg, serve as the Alumni Organization for WMRC, and functioned as the primary fundraiser for the Tack Family Boathouse in Chickahominy Riverfront Park.
The largest rowing organization in Williamsburg is the William and Mary Rowing Club. Founded in 1985, this team of men and women have represented the College of William and Mary at regattas throughout the nation. Not surprisingly, FWR is comprised of many former William and Mary rowers and we maintain a strong relationship with WMRC. In the past, FWR has disbursed funds to WMRC for shells, oars, miscellaneous equipment, dock repair and the Tack Family boathouse. Currently FWR is actively engaged in fundraising for a WMRC endowment fund.
For more information about WMRC, please visit their website.
FWR also supported the development of a community rowing organization in the form of Williamsburg Boat Club. Since 2003, WBC has served both competitive and recreational rowers of all ages and experience levels in the Williamsburg area. Community members wishing to learn more about the sport of rowing should visit WBC’s website.
As the local rowing community grows, we expect there to be demand for the creation of high school rowing teams. However, at this stage, the Williamsburg Boat Club serves the junior rowers in the area.
